People stood completely stunned while at Sotheby’s while a framed print of Banksy’s mural called ‘Balloon Girl’ started to shred automatically after it was auctioned off for $1.4 million! If you ever go online I am sure you have seen pictures or heard of this happening. Cleverly, the shredder was built inside the artworks frame, designed by Banksy of course. His concept behind this was to basically give consumerism the middle finger in a monumental way by having the painting be completely shredded in front of the buyer. However, half way the shredder failed leaving a half non-shredded and half shredded painting.
These conceptual postcards by Lesha Limonov were made to play off this very moment, as the prints begin to shred when you tug on a tab. As the postcard moves downwards you witness the art shredding, as well as reading the message behind the art that is on the frame itself. There are many categories of art, but this certainly should have its own. The visual arts are very important both online and physically, so for Banksy to make a comment through art about consumerism was a very smart thing to do. A sort of lesson for sale, if you will.
