Imagine a fridge that you wanted green things to grow in! No, it’s not a sign to clean out your fridge – it’s the ecosystem you have created with Verdant, The Eco Refrigerator by Yolegmma Márquez, Erin Glaberson and Emily Kvale.
In creating a product that promotes sustainable living, these young designers have chosen to remake one of the central parts of the modern kitchen: the fridge. Over the years, fridges have developed in terms of space, storage, and lessening their ecological impact. Big fridge companies are attempting to make their appliances more gree, like the eco-friendly refrigerators from Maytag, Frigidaire, and GE. The minds behind Verdant want to take it a step or two further, creating an entire sustainable ecosystem right in the fridge!
Verdant would feature cameras in the door that let you see inside without holding the door open and wasting precious energy, like the glass-door fridges from AJ Madison and Subzero Wolf but more energy efficient and safer than glass. There would also be sensors to let you know how much energy the fridge is using.
Not only does Verdant store your food, but it encourages the cultivation and proper storage of herbs, spices, and fresh produce. Specially-designed compartments help you to achieve this and always have these healthy ingredients on hand. The drawers themselves contain removable silicone pieces for easy clean up!
If you’re looking for ways to support the Earth and eat healthier, this fridge is perfect for you! Check out one of the designer’s webpages to learn more about how Verdant works. Hopefully we will see this on the market soon!
